I meet people practically every day, who, when the topics of environmental sustainability, climate change, and/or zero waste management come up, they express heart-felt dismay and despair at the world’s situation and their feelings that its problems/challenges are too big to do anything about other than to pay lip-service.
I know the feeling! Sometimes I think “These problems are beyond me.” Big business with their economic self-interests and their powerful lobbies always win. Any effort is futile!
“NOT SO”, Says Douglas Makenzie-Mohr an internationally recognized environmental psychologist. He notes that if one adopts a “problem-solving” based attitude as a means of coping with these strong negative feelings, we can help stem the tide of destruction. Adopting such an attitude gives us a perception of some control to correct these challenges such that we can make a difference!
The first step to changing my attitude to a problem-solving focus, came from listening to/reading about success stories. Then I joined some groups which believed they could make a difference. I started to feel better! However, I was still somewhat skeptical until I read Dr. McKenzie-Mohr’s book Fostering Sustainable Behaviour. It is well organized and easy to read. In it were many, many examples of people, and organizations making a significant contribution to offset the challenges above. Further, it contained his practical 5-step Community Based Social-Marketing approach, replete with many examples for each step.
So now I feel much more positive about my and other’s ability to change our attitude given Dr. McKenzie’s very pragmatic plan, so that we can make a difference. Won’t you join me; together we can make a significant contribution and live a happier healthier and more fulfilled life!
